Khayae FM Community Radio

Myanmar's first community radio station
DW Akademie / Welthungerhilfe

I managed a multi-year project to establish the first licensed community radio station in Myanmar, a project with the Ministry of Information, a rural development association, Germany's Welthungerhilfe and DW Akademie.

The project involved careful negotiations with the government, location scouting, community training, equipping a radio studio and overseeing a station mentor. Khayae FM went on the air in 2017.

A second station was planned for Myanmar before a 2022 military coup d'état and a severe crackdown on press freedom ended the project.
I wrote a step-by-step guide on setting up a community station in Myanmar, which was translated into five of the country’s ethnic languages.
Radio station staff and volunteers organized events in the community and created revenue-generation programs to make the station more self-sufficient.
Volunteers from the largely farming community where the station was located were trained on basic journalism, media ethics and radio production and hosting.
